“Materials showing applications in interdisciplinary areas of research”

Due to the unique characteristics, graphene and graphene derivatives act like platform materials for developing extra ordinary materials for electronic, sensor, energy storage, biomedical, water filtration, air filtration and reinforcement applications.

Compared to graphene oxide and reduced graphene oxide, graphene possesses high electrical conductivity. Because of this reason, graphene is more suitable for electronic application than the former two materials.

Graphene, graphene oxide and reduced graphene oxide can be used as adsorbent in both air and water filtration applications. This is because, these graphitic materials satisfy the minimum requirements (high surface area, presence of π system, appropriate mechanical properties and presence of hydrophilic functional groups) of a good adsorbent material.

Comparatively graphene oxide and reduced graphene oxide will be more suitable for filtration applications. This is because these two materials are devoted to have plenty of oxygen containing functionalities. In addition to the π-π stacking interactions, these groups help in providing additional hydrogen bonding interactions also.

The three graphitic materials, G, GO and rGO can be used as efficent reinforcement fillers for polymer composites, plastics, rubber and concrete. GO content in the additives play a vritical role. This is because of its superior properties comes from the π bonded honeycomb lattice strructure, presence of functional groups and high surface area. The possibility of π-π stacking and hydrogen bonding interaction between graphene oxide and substrates (polymer composites, plastics, rubber or concrete) develops strong cross linked network between them. This makes the material more mechanically stable.
The unique properties of graphene like high tensile strength, elongation, water resistance make them suitable for durable coating applications. Graphene based coatings can prevent crack and provide resistance towards water. The material additives made for coatings are very fine and naturally blend with paints amd coatings to give very uniform solutions. The graphene based additives are expected to bring a paradigm shift in the Paints and Coatings Industry.
Since graphene, graphene oxide and reduced graphene oxide are characteristic of having high surface area, they can act as an excellent support for catalysts. These materials can exhibit tunable interaction with the substrate molecules. This means the applications in chemical synthesis can see a great change in the way they are carried out.
